The social media giant Twitter witnessed one of the worst hacks in its history as accounts of prominent personalities like Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, Barack Obama got hacked. Hackers posted tweets soliciting bitcoins and promising to double it. Within hours of the attack beginning, the bitcoin address had received more than 350 payments, totaling around $100,000. Verified Twitter accounts were briefly suspended from posting on the microblogging platform, but they have since been returned to their owners and are functioning normally again.

Twitter blocks bitcoin addresses.

Twitter support put out a statement saying that the hacking of high-profile twitter accounts was a result of a “coordinated social engineering attack.” According to the Independent report, it seems to be no longer possible to include bitcoin addresses in tweets. However, Twitter has not made any official statement about blocking bitcoin addresses on its platform. A twitter user was able to post her bitcoin address by adding a single dot to the middle of the address. The user wrote, “It looks like Twitter is blocking BTC addresses from being included in tweets.” However, it is still possible to post a picture of a screenshot of a bitcoin address.

Bitcoin gets negative exposure because of the Twitter hack.

Several people called the incident a “bitcoin scam,” which was, in reality, a “Twitter scam.” The microblogging platform admitted that the hack was a result of a coordinated social engineering attack on employees and hackers had access to internal tools to carry such a big heist. The scammer used twitter accounts of some of the world’s richest and famous personalities to solicit bitcoins in their names by promising to double them. Bitcoin scams are not new on twitter. Scammers impersonate influential celebrities to lure in victims, but this was the first time someone actually hacked the accounts of prominent personalities to ask for bitcoins.
