“Ethereum Name Service(ENS)” is a platform that is working on Ethereum and it’s meaning is pretty obvious to everyone. “Name Service”-it merely means that the project provides naming services like a human will enter a common word, and the ENS will return a machine-understandable response.
What does Ethereum mean here?
It is often said that ENS is the naming service that is used for the Ethereum system. This is true that ENS provides naming services for Ethereum network and system, but it’s not just limited to that. ENS provides naming services for non-Ethereum platforms as well.
ENS is also used to resolve IPFS and Swarm hashes for websites that are decentralized. They also help in determining to Ethereum hex addresses. New services are added to the service since it’s continuously developing and the company is planning to use the ENS service to mirror DNS records in the future.
So this concludes that “Ethereum” part defines that ENS is a naming service that is built on the Ethereum platform. The smart contracts between Ethereum blockchain and ENS are the infrastructure of the naming service.
On the other hand, it is different from the way Domain Name System(DNS) works. Launched in the 1980’s it boasts a hierarchical server system that is controlled by private entities. It has been in use for years, and it’s time we get a new upgrade for the system and ENS can very well help with it by providing a modern infrastructure paired with a secure platform.
ENS is providing an excellent service for Ethereum as it’s naming service, but it has the potential to help the whole internet with its naming infrastructure.
