Global telecom company Vodafone has partnered with the blockchain startup Energy Web to work on a renewable energy project. The partnership aims to incorporate SIM centric digital ledger technology with the IoT connectivity. The internet-of-things connection will be provided by the leader in this environment, Vodafone Business, to “create secure IDs for energy assets” around the world. Vodafone has over 100 million connections globally. Energy Web announced in a Medium post that the collaboration would attempt to connect and improve the integration of renewable and distributed energy assets.

Renewable and distributed assets can be integrated with energy grids safely.

In its medium post, the blockchain startup wrote that renewable and distributed assets like wind turbines, batteries, heat pumps, and solar panels could be integrated with energy grids safely and efficiently with this partnership. Similar to the way telecom operators securely identify mobile phones using SIM cards, the partnership with the telecom company will enable energy grid players to recognize distributed energy assets connected to their power grids. According to the announcement, the ability to identify and validate distributed-generation assets in the smart grid is essential to maintain stability.

Technology can be used to help protect the planet and improve people’s lives.

Walter Kok, CEO of Energy Web, said that they see the convergence of multiple sectors in making the energy transition happen — the energy sector, of course, but also automotive, telecoms, and even finance. According to the CEO, the energy sector can only evolve so fast and so far without taking into account IoT connectivity. The CEO further noted that bringing together their expertise in energy and decentralization with Vodafone Business’s leadership in IoT creates a powerful combination.

Erik Brenneis, Vodafone Business IoT director, said that as the number of decentralized, new-generation, low-carbon devices grows, so does the need for them to be securely connected regardless of location. Erik Brenneis believes that technology and connectivity can help protect the planet and improve people’s lives
