South African bitcoin investment company at the center of a cease and desist order is pushing back at the allegations of running a ponzi scheme or a scam.

Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson, 45, has been extradited to the US from Thailand to face criminal charges. Prosecutors have alleged that Karlsson defrauded more than 3,500 victims for over $11 million in a crypto scam. Karlsson may face up to 20 year in jail, and a maximum $250,000 fine if convicted in the case.

Karlsson lured in investors through false promotions.

Prosecutors have alleged that Karlsson used the website to invite potential investors to purchase shares of the plan for $98 per share in exchange for an eventual payout of 1.15 kilograms of gold per share. But he never intended to pay out any returns. The complaint further describes how Karlsson allegedly used a second website, www.hci25.com, to make false communications to potential investors in an $11 million crypto scam.

Karlsson may face up to 20 years in jail.

If convicted, Karlsson may face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine for the wire fraud and securities fraud charges. The next detention hearing is scheduled for Friday, November 2019.

It is also alleged that Karlsson made multiple false communications to potential investors, for example, once Karlsson allegedly explained that a payout did not occur because releasing so much money all at once could have a negative effect on financial systems throughout the world.
