LG CNS, a subsidiary of Seoul-based LG Corporation (1), is piloting a unique way of conducting transactions in one of its employee offices. The company is trialing a facial payment service at its employee cafeteria that uses native digital currency. The service uses a designated reader equipped with AI software to recognize faces. Once the face is recognized, payment is automatically made using a pre-registered community currency.

LG CNS aims to reduce unnecessary human contact while making payments.

According to LG CNS, this service aims to make payments more convenient and reduce unnecessary human contact in comparison to smart tags or mobile QR code payments. The company noted that the whole system uses the cloud. The trial is being conducted at one reader and one counter located at one of the company’s office cafeterias, but the company plans to expand the service to more restaurants and stores across the company. The company also plans to continue to test AI, cloud, and blockchain technology to foster new services that promote efficiency in work.

LG CNS deployed facial recognition service in February.

Earlier this year in February, LG CNS deployed a facial recognition gate service at its headquarters in Seoul. The facial recognition solution has already been deployed to 26 different gates so far across the company’s headquarters. It is hoping to eventually expand the new gate control service to some 170 of its clients. The LG Corporation subsidiary is also developing a blockchain-based food distribution platform to render accurate information to consumers on where food is served in local school cafeterias are sourced.

Blockchain technology is being widely adopted and studied by governments and different organizations all around the world. The technology which underpins cryptocurrency has emerged as a useful technology because of its transparency function and reducing paperwork in several fields, including logistics, health care, and many others. The use cases for this technology are widely researched as several central banks have announced to launch their own centralized digital currencies.
