The encrypted, privacy-oriented messaging app Signal is now accepting different cryptocurrencies in donations. Signal officially announced on Twitter that the platform has started accepting crypto donations as a form of support for the Signal Technology Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind the app. “As a nonprofit organization, we depend on your support. If you’ve been patiently waiting for Signal to accept cryptocurrency donations, you no longer need to hodl back your generosity,” Signal tweeted.

Signal accepts 12 cryptocurrencies in donations.

Signal accepts 12 cryptos including Bitcoin, Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Gemini Dollar (GUSD) stablecoin, Basic Attention Token (BAT), Zcash (ZEC), and Chainlink (LINK). Cryptocurrency donations are now part of Signal’s “Donate” section on its official website specifying that the new feature is enabled via a major crypto donations platform, The Giving Block. “The Giving Block also supports anonymous donations,” the messaging app noted in a memo accompanying its crypto donation section. Signal is a cross-platform messaging service with end-to-end encryption. The Signal Technology Foundation was launched in February 2018 by WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton, who left both WhatsApp and Facebook to create Signal in 2017.

Signal is reportedly exploring crypto payments features.

Privacy-focused messaging app Signal is reportedly devoting resources toward the development of a cryptocurrency payments service for its users. According to a report by Casey Newton, the founder of the technology newsletter service Platformer, Signal is mulling crypto payments integration in the app. The report claims that Signal reportedly ran pilot tests for such a token on the Binance-backed, Stellar-based privacy cryptocurrency platform MobileCoin. Moxie Marlinspike, who also serves as an adviser on the MobileCoin project, heightening speculation that the test could be a trial run for subsequent deployment in the messaging app. Signal will become the latest messaging service to enter the crypto and digital payments arena if the reports turn out to be true.
