What is dark web? How is bitcoin used on dark web?

Dark Web seems to be a very daunting word to hear. It seems like something only high level computer scientists or skilled coders could handle. Something that the common man could not begin to comprehend? Some might even feel like the Dark Web is a dangerous mysterious place which should not be looked into at all because it is evil and ‘dark’. It is of course true that a huge load of criminal activities take place on this Dark Web however there are several legitimate things going on in this space too. How would you feel if I told you that it was rather a very interesting place to visit and explore? How would you feel if I told you you could actually access it for yourself?

Without getting into high tech words and jargon, in simple terms, the part of the Internet or the World Wide Web (WWW), which is hidden or is not visible to search engines, even the ones as popular and sophisticated as Google Search, is called the Dark Web. To get yourself to explore the mysterious lands of the Dark Web, you would need to get your hands at a browser which can actually help you reach the Dark Web. Just like you need your Google Chrome or Firefox browsers to access all sorts of websites and search engines, you would require the Tor browser to use the Dark Web.

The Tor Browser

To access the Dark Web, you require the Tor browser. It is crazily slow and might even send you over the edge sometimes because of how slow it works and how unreliable it actually is. When you enter a web page request into the Tor browser, it routes it through a long series of proxy servers. These proxy servers are actually maintained and operated by a large number of volunteers all across the globe. It is with the support of these proxy servers which help you go through the space undetectable and untraceable just like Harry Potter under the Cloak of Invisibility.

The crazy world of Dark Web

However, you do need to note that maybe the Dark Web space is really not for everyone. In addition to being crazingly slow, highly unreliable, and maddeningly unpredictable, the the Dark Web is also a space for way too many crazy and mostly illegal things happening. Did you know that you could buy a lifetime subscription of Netflix on the Dark Web with just $6? That is some great way of ripping off the Netflix people. Not just this, you could even hire people to attack someone, in person or on the cyber platform, you could buy drugs and guns and other ammunition without showing any sorts of arms licenses. You can buy credit cards, hack into other people’s Netflix and other accounts, debit cards, usernames and passwords. All this might seem shady however quite a lot of these things are not actually illegal and even if someone from the government knows about it, you cannot go to jail for these because they are not exactly a criminal offense.

Bitcoin and the Dark Web

This should not come as a surprise but Bitcoin is actually the de facto currency of the things being sold and purchased on the Dark Web. Moreover, the one commodity that is bought the most using these Bitcoins on the Dark Web are in fact unprescribed drugs. Although the Dark Web was quite prevalent even years before Bitcoins were launched, but with Bitcoins in the picture, the Dark Web has flourished even more because of the added anonymity with comes with the Bitcoin platform. Coincidentally, the Dark Web has helped to grow the user base of Bitcoins as well. So basically, these two have simply been in a symbiotic relationship which has helped both of them flourish, expand and grow.

The quality control of products and services is highly uncertain and unsure since no two parties actually no each other and everything is anonymous and hidden. You can never be sure that the product you are paying your money for will actually ever reach your doorstep or not. Every encrypted communication or transaction does not ensure any sort of reliance and you could be ripped off very easily.

However, when the good people join forces and make their presence active on the Dark Web, they actually are on the constant lookout for illegal activities on the Dark Web and this has actually helped them nab violators. It was in a similar fashion when the Bitcoin oriented, Silk Road was caught and gotten rid of. They also keep looking for stolen data or credentials or any other security violations, thus actually serving as a tool for intelligence organisations to work with.
