Benjamin Reynolds, the mastermind behind the massive bitcoin Ponzi scheme called Control-Finance, must pay the CFTC a penalty of $572 million.

US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Thursday announced to expand its financial research wing. LabCFTC is responsible for researching new financial technology, including blockchain, and cryptocurrency tools.

The research lab was formed back in 2019, and since then, it has fallen under CFTC Office of General Counsel’sCounsel’s oversight, but now it would directly report to the CFTC chairman Heath Tarbert. Tarbert said that in its new capacity, LabCFTC would continue to be focused on both internal and external innovation.

Currently, LabCFTC is headed by Melissa Netram, who also worked as Intuit’s director of global public policy and regulatory affairs. Chairman Tarbert also noted that the agency’s vision is to be the global standard for sound derivatives regulations. LabCFTC published a primer on artificial intelligence and its role in financial markets on Thursday.
